Environmental compliance

The organic law on environment protection made the environmental impact assessment (EIA) mandatory for approval of major projects, activities and programs in the Republic of Rwanda. However, besides the legislation, guidance is needed of a more technical nature to streamline the conduct of EIA and appraisal of EIA reports. As such, the establishment of General guidelines and procedures for environmental impact assessment, which unifies the legal requirements with the practical conduct of EIA, meets a need in the pursuit for sustainable development in Rwanda.

Environmental Impact Assessement (EIA) is mandatory for the approval of major development projects in the Republic of Rwanda. Before commencing the implementation of their projects, investors are required to cross-check whether their projects must undergo an EIA. A team of environmental analysts at Rwanda Development Board assist investors in this verification and in the obtention of the EIA if the latter is deemed necessary before project implementation can begin.
